Drawings

Drawing:

  • To cause to move in a given direction or to a given position, as by leading
  • To take or pull out
  • To bring about deliberately, to provoke or elicit a response
  • To extract or take for one’s own use
  • To make a likeness of on a surface, using mostly lines

I’m not sure any of these dictionary definitions hold true for these drawings . It’s more like mining, with filth and mess and water, and crawling around on hands and knees, ‘digging’ back down to the surface (of the paper) to find the seam that will yield an image.

Mostly based on places in and around Nottingham, these images throw up black, solid obstacles; put barriers in your way and only brief glimpses of light and exit.

Do you feel trapped and do the escape routes lead anywhere that might give you some space?

Cerne Abbas Giant.

The Cerne Abbas Giant
Okay, so this is not Nottingham but the linear nature of this ancient work echos through time to the modern world of the plans, the blueprints of monumental ‘brutal’ structures and power

Motorways

The Motorway At Night
Pre-cast, concrete, anonymous. Are we there yet? And how would you know anyway?

Shopping Trollies, Pylons & Grids

Shopping Trolley
Are you happy when you shop or do you feel like your inprisoned - behind bars? Do you feel happy until you get home with the goods and start to worry at the cost of it all. Are you even happy with your shiny things…

Subways & Flyovers

More concrete. More everywhere and nowhere. The medieval world regarded ‘below’ as a sub-terranean realm of the dead and the damned. Do we damn ourselves with our cold, anonymous underworld.
